Fall florals….

While we all love our florals, sometimes they can seem overdone, or not-so-season-appropriate. While we all love our florals, sometimes they can seem overdone, or not-so-season-appropriate. Any fashion fiend is familiar with Miranda Priestly’s sarcastic comment from The Devil Wears Prada, “Florals for spring? Groundbreaking.” And she’s right, it’s been overdone. But completely abandoning a portion of your patterned basics can take a toll on your overall wardrobe. Make the most of what’s already in your closet by incorporating your favorite flowery frocks this autumn – just understand how to style them correctly.There are three major rules when styling your fave florals for fall:

Rule 1: Keep the color palette dark. Any floral based on a navy, black, or burgundy background is fall-friendly. This rule is pretty intuitive if you think about it. We automatically go for pastels, mint, peach, white, and more for spring and summertime. So as long as the color palette isn’t too light, you know you’re good to go for October-onward.

Rule 2: Layer, layer, layer. Not only is one print on its own a bit boring, but when it’s a floral, it’s too summery. Layer with fall textures like fur, fringe, or feathers to keep the look cozy. I’ve added a LF Stores shaggy coat to this ensemble for an easy top layer. If it’s too warm for a heavy topcoat, opt for a sleeveless fur number or an embellished leather jacket to create the same luxurious look (without locking in the heat.)

Rule 3: Mix it up. Don’t let the poppy print be the only thing that’s going on. If your chosen floral is big and spaced out, pair it with a minimal print like tiny polkadots or animal print (like my clutch, here.) If your floral is small-scale and placed close together, add a print to contrast it, like a big block stripe or an even bigger floral.

Personally, I like to draw out one or two colors from the print itself to highlight throughout the rest of the outfit. Red is the color I chose above, which I’ve highlighted with my streamlined Alice + Olivia wide leg trousers. This H2T look easily goes from day tonight by just switching out a tote for a clutch and throwing on a red lip. And like always, I’ve finished everything off with a pair of Charlotte Olympia platforms. Not a platform girl? No worries – your black shoe of preference would finish off this look just the same!

What I wore;

Top, pants- Alice + Olivia

Jacket- LF Stores
